The Buzz from Energy DrinksTeenagers and young adults spend almost $2 billion on caffeinated drinks with names like Monster, Red Bull, Amp, Rockstar and Full Throttle. Heights Nurse Kerri Weaver says: “Caffeine is really bad for kids. I think that kids shouldn’t be able to buy energy drinks. Only if you're over a certain age, but it’s still not good for adults either!”
Caffeine researches that have studied the effects of the stimulant on the body say there’s nothing alarming about the amount of caffeine in a single can of these energy drinks. But experts say teenagers don’t realize how much caffeine they’re really drinking. And many teenagers also don’t know how easy it is to become dependent on the stimulant.
Withdrawal symptoms can include headaches, mood swings and trouble concentrating. Some young adults are more sensitive to stimulants than others, so some teens may get a bad case of the jitters from very little caffeine.
There is so much controversy regarding the actual effects of these drinks. The calories in these energy drinks may many times be less than that of the typical soft drink, however, it is the other content of the energy drink that may be of concern. Here's a list of those ingredients in energy drinks and what they are:
1. Methylxanthines are diuretic agent that serves as a smooth muscle relaxant of the cardiac muscle and CNS stimulant.
2. Guarana are large leaves and clusters of flowers, and are best known for their fruit. Each fruit harbors one seed, which contains approximately five times as much as caffeine as a coffee bean.
3. Taurine is an amino acid that the body produces naturally, but exactly how it works or how much is too much is not known.
4. Ginseng is an herbal or dietary supplement.
5. Carnitine plays a critical role in energy production. It transports long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria so they can be burned to produce energy.
6. Glucuronolactone is a hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme.
7. Caffeine is a white, crystalline bitter alkaloid, usually derived from coffee or tea.
These products are proven to speed up your heart rate and raise your blood pressure. |

Heights Varsity Volleyball Places Fourth in State
The Heights High varsity volleyball team has worked very hard this season! At the beginning of the season Northwest took two games from them, putting them 40-2 at the end of the season. Their rankings got them into sub-state, playing Derby and Southeast. After winning sub-state the team advanced to state. The state volleyball tournament was held in Topeka, Kansas. At state they played eight teams. On Friday they won two games out of three, losing only to Washburn Rural. On Saturday they lost to Blue Valley West and Goddard. Heights volleyball came in at fourth place. Washburn Rural, from Topeka, placed first. Second place went to Blue Valley West and third place went to Goddard. This was the first year in thirty two years that Heights has gone to sub-state and state. At the end of the season players and coaches were awarded. Sara Bailey was awarded with 1st team all-state and Allison Bailey was awarded with 1st team all-city. Ashlea Bengston took 1st team all-city and all-state. Tiera Andrews was awarded with honorable mention. Nicole Lund was the only setter to receive 1st team all-city. Last but not least, Coach Gary Thomason was awarded with coach of the year. This season took a lot of hard work and dedication from players and coaches alike. |

sports smack, Oct 16 Heights athletics rises to the top, all but the soccer team. The volleyball team adds to their win streak, now at 24 games, a nearly unnoticed accomplishment around the school. So again I’ll start off praising them, a much deserved praising if I may say so myself. The Falcon volleyball team looks to finish off the rest of the City League with their upcoming games against East and North. I wish I didn’t have to talk about soccer, but last week they dropped another game, this time to Dodge City. And with the way the season has been going I am hoping they beat Great Bend, but I’m not holding my breath. I almost feel sorry for the soccer team as much as I’ve hated on them in the past few weeks. Yet, then again, I thank them for giving me something to laugh about. Personally I grant the Falcon soccer team the paper bag award for the season to forget. A sport I have failed to mention in the past few weeks is girl’s tennis, they may not be having the season to remember, but it’s not the abomination that the soccer team has come up with. The tennis team in the past few weeks has taken fifth in the GWAL tournament and sixth in the 6A regional. Now what most people have been waiting for, football. The Aces of East, come back for a visit at Heights again this week. The Falcon defense remains steady as a stone, preparing for “The best running back prospect in the nation,” Bryce Brown, as named by Rivals.com. But the Heights defense won’t tremble as they haven’t given up a win yet, only allowing just over 73 rushing yards a game. Personally after watching Brown I didn't think he was as good as he was hyped up to be, fumbling the ball and not hitting his holes. And when the Falcon defense shuts down Brown they East offense will have nobody to turn to. Back by popular demand, predictions. Heights will win again. Kyle's prediction- 28-17 Heights Wayde's prediction- 24-21 Heights Christina's prediction- 24-17 Heights |

Sports Smack Oct. 9 Beasty volleyball team on a hot streakFirst off I want to start off this week’s segment with a shout out to the volleyball team. They are playing amazingly right now. In my opinion they are Beasty good, winning 21 straight games after losing the season opener to Northwest. They even came back and beat Northwest in the Newton Invitational. The Falcon volleyball team travels to Carroll tomorrow to beat Bishop Carroll and South. Maybe the boys varsity soccer team can take some lessons in winning. They have dropped their last four and continue the spiral starting with the loss to West. The varsity football team looks to remain undefeated playing South this week. Joey Barnes leads the team in tackles even though he played a limited amount of time in the smack down of North and Great Bend. This week the Falcons face South, which next to West, has gained the fewest yards on the season in the League. Poor South, it bites to face the best defense in the City. But with all of the hype around the defense, some may over look the Heights offense, which is the second best offensive system in the City as far as yards gained goes. The Heights Falcons will win again in a decisive manner. It’s prediction time. Kyle’s prediction- 35-7 Heights Wayde's prediction 45-10 Heights. Nick's prediction- 42-6 Heights |
